How to bake a cake

May 4th, 2009

I would love to know how to bake properly and if I truly want to class it as a hobby I must master the basic art of the mumble sponge cake
Agreed this is not the most exciting but any budding student has to start somewhere

Now it may seem simple place all the stuff in a bowl and beat but still best to document
You can mix with a wooden spoon or by hand-held mixer but remember to take out that days tension the better combined the better the mixture

75g (6oz) margarine or
softened butter
175g (6oz) caster sugar
3 large eggs
175g (6oz) self-raising
flour, sifted
1tsp baking powder
1tsp vanilla extract
pinch of salt

1.Heat the oven to 180C (gas mark 4) and grease an 18cm (7in) round cake tin with a little extra butter or margarine
2.Cut a piece of greaseproof paper or non-stick baking parchment to fit the base of the tin.
3.Put all the combined mixture into tin.
3.Pour or spoon the mixture in
4.Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for about 45-50 minutes.
5.Let the cake sit in the tin for 5 minutes, then gently run a knife around the edge and turn the cake out onto a wire rack to cool.

Put the kettle…..enjoy

Collecting Barbies for a Hobby

May 3rd, 2009

I loved Barbie Dolls as a little girl and even now. She is the icon of girlieness and was Barbie’s introduction at the American International Toy Fair in 1959. A serious collector I had as many as my pocket money would allow plus I wanted the accessories. The serious collectors, who have hundreds of dolls, spend thousands of dollars each year, and look at their collection as more of investment wash you mouth out if you think they are toys.
Barbie was invented by Ruth Handler in the 1950s and she named the doll after her daughter, Barbara. Ruth shortened the name to Barbie when she saw her daughter preferred to play with adult looking dolls over the baby looking dolls.
Barbies birthday is March 9, 1959 as this was the day she was introduced to a trade fair.

One of my favorite pass times when I was younger was the Girl Guides. Unfortunately for me it now seems like long and distant memory
I thought I would look back. I remember all the bib bib dob dob or was that the Scouts……
History of guiding?
Well there was this fella called Robert Baden-Powell basically what he did was start up a boys club originally in on Brownsea Island in 1907. Following its success and after publishing a manual documenting the club, Baden-Powell soon found himself organizing the Boy Scout Movement.
Of course us girls wanted to get in on the action and following a relay at the Crystal Palace and what with us women not wanted to be left out some girls turned up too.
Because of the obvious interest that it seemed to generate from the Boys, Baden wanted to emulate the success for the Girls and asked his sister Agnes if she would manage the Girl Guide club. A few years later his wife Olave became involved
Did you know that’s the name however was originally the Girl Scouts, but it was changed as Baden did not want to encourage a tomboyish image for the girls and wanted a separate identity for the girls, independent form their brothers!!!! Baden-Powell decided that ‘Girl Guides’ would be a good name for young women following a trip to India where the word Guide referred to men going on very risky dangerous missions. Bring it on us women are prepared to take on death defying antics!

Up up and away….

I remember wanting to try a hobby that would take to the great outdoors a few years ago, so I looked up a number of options and found something called paragliding.

Paragliding is a hobby where u strap a big parachute to your back run off the side of a hill and hope that the wind takes you up in the air. I thought this looks great so I booked myself on a 1 day taster course, the benefits of this being that you don’t have to fork out on the equipment which can be quite expensive. Paragliding is also a cheaper alternative to hang gliding, gliding or flying one of those small one man planes.

Well I turned up on the day and was surprised how soon I was kitted out, I then spent most of it running up and down and hill. I did manage to get some 30ft up in the air for a few seconds before slowly drifting to the ground.

Would I try it again ? Yes, however to get the most out of it you need to invest a lot of money and training (£2000 +) as safety is very important especially when ur a few thousand feet off the ground !!!

What is a Hobby?

April 3rd, 2009

Well what does Hobby actually mean? When trying to find a new Hobby the first thing is to understand what having Hobby actually means

Whether it be collection stamps or traveling the world the key is to finding a pleasure or interest in a subject or pastime you enjoy. Does this extend to watching TV or playing video Games, well as times have changed so way not but to a degree. You’re not hurting anyone.

So in brief:

Something that you like to do for pleasure in your spare time.

To go back to the idea that watching TV is a Hobby, I would like to stress that I mean if you have a particular interest in say for example Old Movies or your enjoy watching your team play on the sports channel. By stating you watch TV is too general as everyone does that. It would be like staying going to bed is a hobby!

One top tip and quote I thought was rather amusing is from Benjamin Franklin

‘Beware a hobby that eats’

The Best Hobby ever Shopping!

May 12th, 2008

Well what a way to start my blog my wring about my favorite and the most important hobby in the world shopping. I am being serious there is true art and skill to a pressure of the retail therapy. It requires dedication and passion. How I scoff at these people that just can’t grasp the skill. It is truly down to the preparation as with any sport or skill.
Now let’s take for example an outfit for a night out. Start if you can 2 weeks in advance (I will address last minute shopping in a later post).
Flick through the magazines and be realistic yes it would be a dream to have Kate Moss’s figure and bank balance but don’t waste time on things you know deep down won’t suite you. When it comes to the price tag, have a look at what you like so at least you have an idea of what sort of shape and style is current and you like.
Try and look online to get an idea of what’s in the shops you like. Remember with most online website have only a selection but will be a good indication that you are heading to the right place.
Night before – Take tan this is personnel choice but I feel so much better about myself when have tan (fats better brown!)
Right shopping days arrives
Make sure you have the right underwear either on or in a bag and wear the right shoes!! I don’t mean sensible (hell no) but ones that will be similar to what you may wear with your new outfit. Think about it, it could affect the length of your dress!
By this point you should have an idea if where you’re heading. I am a strong believer in don’t buy the first thing you see would you buy a car or house this way NO, look at your options then go back and purchase.

Remember though, have fun if you can rope a nice lunch and glass of wine perfect – but remember one glass you don’t want to make a horrendous choice!
