Taking up writing

July 27th, 2011

If you find yourself with lots of time on your hands, why not start writing a novel?

This is a huge undertaking but anyone who has ever fulfilled their ambition of writing a decent novel will tell you what a satisfying achievement it is.

The biggest challenge when writing a book is figuring out what to write about. It may be a good idea to head to a creative writing class, or even take a whole course on the subject. Join an online forum and discuss your ideas with other budding writers, and remember to write down every good plot twist or character detail you think of.

Writing a novel requires a lot of commitment and determination, but you’ll be so proud of yourself when you finish.

Learning a language as your new hobby

July 22nd, 2011

Some of the best hobbies are those that can teach you a new skill, as well as being enjoyable. This is why so many people enjoy taking up sports, crafts and even learning a new language.

There are many courses available online and in the real world for learning a new language. Unless you are lucky enough to know someone who is fluent in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Japanese or whatever language you want to learn, you should prepare yourself for some initial costs.

However, just think about what you can do with your new language skills. It can help your career prospects, and you may even be able to move to another country.

Hobby ideas for summer

July 16th, 2011

You can start a new hobby at any time of the year, but summer and the good weather it brings allows you to enjoy a wider range of new pastimes.

Why not try:

A new sport like golf, cricket, volleyball or even ultimate Frisbee – anything that gets your outdoors enjoying the fresh air!

Photography or painting – there are plenty of gorgeous scenes to capture during summer, so why not commit them to print or canvas?

Surfing – head to the seaside and get stuck in!

Skateboarding or roller skating – just make sure you put in lots of practice, and remember to wear the appropriate safety gear.

Why not start a new hobby with a friend?

July 11th, 2011

If you’re taking up a new hobby – be it a sport, craft or any other weird and wonderful new pastime – it could be a good idea to start with a friend.

There are many benefits to this, such as getting to spend some quality time with your friend over a shared interest, or having someone to go with you to a class in your new hobby where you don’t know anyone.

Starting a hobby with a friend makes the whole experience much more social, giving you someone with whom to talk about your new interest and share your ideas and excitement

Avoid magic as a new hobby – unless you have easily-impressed kids

July 4th, 2011

When considering trying a new hobby, magic is often one of the first things people think of. They imagine that they will pick it up quickly, have fun and impress all their friends and family at every social gathering. Sadly, it doesn’t always work out this way.

The reality is that it can take a really long time to learn even the most basic of tricks. These are definitely not entertaining, and you may find yourself boring the pants off everyone you know. You won’t be the life and soul of the party, I’m sorry to say, you’ll simply be a grown adult with no friends doing cheesy card tricks.

Pipe cleaner modelling

May 19th, 2011

It’s surprising what you can make with everyday household items – be it empty toilet roll tubes or, as this article focuses on, pipe cleaner brushes.

Model-making is a common hobby, though most people will opt for model kits or sets. To really encourage your creativity, you should try doing it using your own materials and pipe cleaners are a great place to start. These little tools are cheap, and are easy to manipulate into the shapes you require and connect together.

A quick search on Google gives just a few examples of what amazing creatures and objects can be recreated using pipe cleaners; ranging from dinosaurs to DNA strands.

Start reading books

May 10th, 2011

This is probably one of the most popular pastimes for people who want to do something both relaxing and entertaining. The great thing about taking up reading as a regular hobby is that there’s bound to be plenty of books out there that you’ll enjoy – no matter how obscure your tastes are.

To get started try signing up for a membership with your local library and ask for recommendations based on films or previous books you have read. Alternatively, why not check out best seller lists or book charts. If you find a particular book is a chore to read, simply go and get a new one instead.

Storing books can often be a problem, why not get a one of these beautiful black bookcases and have the books on show.

Hieroglyphics Cleaner

May 5th, 2011

Bored of your current job? Fancy doing something a bit more unique? Why not try your hand at cleaning ancient Egyptian text pieces. Let’s face it; none of your friends can boast about being an hieroglyphics cleaner, so you’ll be the talk of the town with a job like this!

Egyptian hieroglyphs have a fantastic heritage – they were the official technique used for writing by the ancient Egyptians themselves. The cleaning itself is no simple task though, as the media for hieroglyphs ranges from highly aged wood to crumbling papyrus. So, if you’re looking for a job with a challenge, challenge yourself as an hieroglyphics cleaner.

Hobby Advertising

March 28th, 2011

There are many types of hobbies which are advertised all around us – some of these we notice more than others. For example – walking around you libraries – to some this is a type of hobby where they come to read and relax. Then you have gyms and sports club where this too is a hobby that the clubs advertise heavily in to get people interested in. on TV too you now see advertisements taking place on cooking lessons, cake making, ship building, models, knitting where each activity is accompanied by a magazine or booklet that’s released on a weekly or fortnightly basis. This again is aimed at individuals who have taken up the specific hobby already or as a means to let others give it a go.
